Tony Bennett And Lady Gaga Surprised A School in NYC

Tony Bennett and Lady Gaga surprised over 700 high school students at Frank Sinatra School of the Arts in New York City on the last day of school by making an appearance on site Monday morning. Founded by Bennett in his hometown of Astoria, the school normally hosts the singer for graduation, but this year, due to his tour schedule, he is unable to join. Instead, he decided to do something special for the last day of classes, so he asked his good friend and collaborator Lady Gaga to join him for a master class in the school’s Tony Bennett Concert Hall.

The two talked about jazz music, The Great American Songbook, creativity and also fielded questions from the students. Then Tony Bennett performed the classic “The Very Thought of You” followed by Lady Gaga’s beautiful version of “Every Time We Say Goodbye.” In a spontaneous and playful moment, the two began to serenade each other with the standard “I Can’t Give You Anything But Love.” Gaga then added in a cheek to cheek slow dance.
“When I first heard Gaga sing my reaction was that she is going to be bigger than Elvis. She is so bright and intelligent and she has it. In jazz you either got it, the syncopation, the rhythm or you don’t, and when I heard Gaga I said she’s got it!”
Gaga talked about the wonderful experience she always has when she sings with Tony, saying, “When I am with Tony I feel like I am 15 years old at home listening to Ella and Coltrane records. The way he sings is effortless and so prolific. It’s so liberating to be able to sing jazz, especially at this point in my career!” In response to Tony’s comment “these songs are so timeless,” Gaga joked: “Like a good black dress, they never go out of style.”
The event ended with student choirs performing a rendition of Tony Bennett’s “Smile” and Lady Gaga’s “Applause.”

Lady Gaga introduces fans to new pet BATPIG

Lady Gaga has introduced her fans to her french bulldog, BATPIG.

The 'G.U.Y' hitmaker posted an image of the new addition to her family on Twitter on Sunday, April 27 which shows the adorable black pooch, who is sitting on her legs, staring into the camera while the pair of them are in a car.

She added the caption: ''Me and my BATPIG #partBAT #partPIG (sic)''

Following this she put an Instagram video up where she gave her cute pet a name.

She explained: ''Her name is Asia. She is a BATPIG. I love her I'm her mum.''

This comes after the 'Alejandro' singer lost her childhood dog, Alice, who was battling cancer, in October last year.

She previously wrote online: ''My puppy Alice died. We had to put her down, cancer ate away at a little angel. My daddy is so sad, we all are, lost a member of our family.

''I just pray Alice found her wonderland.''

Following the tragic incident Gaga wore all black during her time in London in tribute to the late pooch and explained how difficult she was finding being away from home during the difficult period.

She added: ''I love being an entertainer but it is so painful sometimes to be away from home, 17 years she held on, so many memories.''

See Stars With Lady Gaga's Favourite Sunglasses

So it’s getting sunny and you’ve just sat on last summer’s sunnies. Fear not, shiny spectacle hunters, we’ve taken a leaf out of Lady Gaga’s book and thrown our lot in with these crazy kaleidoscope sunglasses by H0les that use chandelier glass for lenses and super cool designs for frames to create these zany designs that have got Germanotta herself bulk buying.

Designed by Pam Tietze who aims to “evoke the feeling of being a tourist in your own reality”, the glasses throw up crazy multi image views of what’s in front of you. Tietze started making them for friends after going into a shop and becoming entranced by the glass crystals that make up chandeliers.  Gaga commissioned her to make a whole bunch for her accessories wardrobe, before creating them for public consumption.

Embrace your colourful side with these visually entrancing goggles, perfect for festivals, hazy summer days and if you’re up for a laugh, going to work on the bus.

Lady Gaga to guest judge on RuPaul's Drag Race?

Lady Gaga may be appearing on an upcoming episode of RuPaul's Drag Race

The hit reality series on Logo features RuPaul as host, with 14 drag queens from across America vying for a cash prize and title.

The 28-year-old star and RuPaul hinted at her possible visit to the show with a tweet from the Drag Race Twitter account last week.

Underneath a photo of RuPaul and the singer together, the tweet was captioned with a quote from Gaga saying: "Can I PLEASE be a judge on Drag Race! RuPaul...these women taught me how to serve!"

On Sunday (April 6), a photo of Gaga and contestant Bianca del Rio was posted to the Drag Race Twitter with the caption: "GAGGING. @ladygaga can't get enough of our girls, including @TheBiancaDelRio."

While Gaga's possible appearance on the show has yet to be confirmed, she has been a vocal fan of the series, now in its sixth season.

The singer is currently promoting her latest single, 'G.U.Y.', off her ARTPOP album.

It was recently revealed that a new ARTPOP album is in the works.

LADY GAGA's ‘G.U.Y’ – SONG MEANING

Lady Gaga‘s cleverly titled ‘G.U.Y.’ plays with words, meanings and double entendre in the lyrics. With ‘G.U.Y.’ being an acronym for ‘Girl Under You,’ she is also experimenting with the idea of gender-defined behaviors, role reversals and sexual politics in a relationship. So much subtext in one insanely catchy pop song!
This is what we’ve discerned as the deeper meaning of Gaga’s ‘G.U.Y.’
“I wanna be the girl under you / I wanna be your G.U.Y. / I wanna be the grave and earth / Our sex doesn’t tell us no lies.”
Here, Gaga’s narrator seems OK with giving up control and submitting. It’s her assessment of sexual politics, but it’s also her way of letting go and giving in, and not being the one calling the shots. There can often be relief in such a scenario, especially for someone used to making all the decisions.
Also, Gaga is the patron saint of the LGBT community in 2014, so playing with the notion of the girl under you being a guy has multiple meanings, and her gay monsters can apply that concept to their read and interpretation of the song. It’s her way of saying whatever it means for you to be a ‘G.U.Y.,’ by virtue of chromosomes or your dating preferences, it’s totally OK.
“I’m gonna wear the tie, want the power to leave you / I’m aiming for full control of this love (of this love) / Touch me, touch me, don’t be sweet / Love me, love me, please retweet / Let me be the girl under you that makes you cry.”
The instinct is to chuckle at her millennial phrase about “retweeting,” but what’s more interesting and intriguing is the idea of a further gender role reversal. She says she wants to wear the tie, which could mean she wants to be the “man`” or at least adopt the responsibility of the male power structure in the relationship, so they are swapping the dominant and submissive positions. And the tie could also be a literal device used to bind someone and take control of them. But this doesn’t have to be in the bedroom, either. It could be regarding their communication about anything in life.
“I don’t need to be on top / To know I’m worth it / ‘Cause I’m strong enough to know the truth / I just want it to be hot / Because I’m best when I’m in love / And I’m in love with you.”
Here, Gaga’s narrator says she has been in both positions — top and bottom, boss and subordinate — and she is fine with either. She doesn’t need to take the reigns or be in charge. She’s in love and any position suits her as long as she is with the one she loves.
That’s the PopCrush analysis of Lady Gaga’s ‘G.U.Y.’ What do you take away from this song?

Lady Gaga's fans will sit under a transparent stage at her forthcoming shows

Lady Gaga is preparing to take her artRAVE: The ARTPOP Ball on the road, and the shows will take place on a transparent platform that will "engulf" the audience and allow them to look at the performance from an unusual angle, with some extra-special seats available for some lucky concert-goers.

She said:
"I'm really excited for a big, huge, clear stage.

"It's like a big party, so sort of like, the stage is these huge panels that really engulf the whole audience to the centre of the arena. But they also have space underneath them for you to walk, so you can look up underneath the stage at the dancers and me. There's a VIP area for special fans who've got tickets to sit inside the stage and have their own bar. It's all really fun and it's a big art rave."

And the Born This Way star joked she will be packing plenty of underwear to ensure her modesty is protected.

Speaking to BBC Radio 1 DJ Scott Mills, she added:
"Yes, I do have panties, yes. I have more panties than clothes probably."

Lady Gaga and Ozzy Osbourne's lyrics named hardest to understand

If you’ve ever been caught singing the wrong lyrics to a famous tune, you are not alone.
A new survey has revealed an alarming number of popular song lyrics misunderstood by the British public.

"A number of Brits commonly misunderstood 'Polka Face' for 'Polk Her Face' "

Almost a quarter of people think lyrics to Abba’s Dancing Queen “See that girl, watch that scene, diggin’ the dancing queen” are actually “See that girl, watch her scream, kicking the dancing queen.”

Queen’s “We Will Rock You” was the second most commonly misheard lyric, with 18 per cent of respondents hearing “Kicking your cat all over the place” in place of “Kicking your can all over the place”.

Ozzy Osbourne and Lady Gaga topped the Blinkbox poll of artists with the hardest lyrics to understand.

Many Brits believed the line in Gaga’s “Polka Face” was “Polk Her Face”, while Ozzy’s lyric “Off the rails on a crazy train” was misheard as “Off the rails on a gravy train.”

Lady Gaga denies claim she 'wasted 356K gallons of water to fill massive pool at Hearst Castle' during worst drought in California history

Lady Gaga has denied reports that she wasted 356,000 gallons of water to fill a massive pool for her music video GUY during the worst drought in California history.
A source claims that in making the short film the Poker Face singer filled the Neptune Pool with heavily chlorinated water at the historic Hearst Castle in Central California, thereby making the potable water unusable to even nurture plants.
But the 28-year-old's rep and a spokesperson for the State Of California have dismissed the allegation, telling MailOnline it is a 'made up story'.

The state rep also made it clear that Gaga, aka Stefani Joanne Angelina Germanotta, only used the bare minimum of chlorine used in drinking water.
The water from the shoot did not go to waste as it was 'used to water landscape' on the Hearst grounds, according to Stapler.
The claims posted on Radar comes after the driest year in over a hundred years in California, with 2013 seeing a series of wild fires in the most populous state in the US.

In addition Lady Gaga has just filmed a Public Service Announcement to encourage water conservation in California in response to the drought.
The PSA was part of the agreement she signed to film her video at Hearst Castle, which is a historic landmark in California.
Gaga also donated $250,000 to Hearst Castle for maintenance and repairs.

HISTORY OF THE HEARST CASTLE

Hearst Castle is a National US and California Historical Landmark nestled in the lush Central California Coast. The estate was designed by renowned architect Julia Morgan over the span of 28 years, 1919 to 1947.
Media mogul William Randolph Hearst had commissioned the lavish castle but died soon after its completion. Although, he did get to enjoy the mansion as it was functional during its nearly three decade long construction. Hearst famously played host to many decadent parties in the mansion before his death in 1951.
The castle had its heyday in the 1920s and 1930s with Hollywood stars flocking to the grounds to rub shoulders with politicians for the outrageous parties thrown by its powerful and influential owner.
Among the luminaries who frequented the estate were such heavyweights as Winston Churchill, Charlie Chaplin, Franklin Roosevelt, Joan Crawford, Charles Lindbergh, and Clark Gable.
The mansion became so iconic during that time that Orson Welles’ fictionalized bio of Hearst featured a similar estate under the name Xanadu in his 1941 masterpiece Citizen Kane.
Another famous movie cameo was Stanley Kubrick’s 1960 Spartacus, which had the castle stand in for the Crassus’ villa.
The Hearst corporation and trust made a donation of the estate to the state of California six years after the newspaper mogul's death.
The Hearst Castle has since become a landmark in the United States, attracting tourists from the around the world. Estimates have annual visits clocking in at one million.
While the castle is in the possession of the state of California, the Hearst Corporation had a contractual condition allowing members of the Hearst family to use the grounds as they like. William Randolph's granddaughter Patty Hearst famously recounted how she used to hide behind the statues near the Neptune Pool as tourists passed by her ancestor's creation.
The Hearst Castle became a National Historic Landmark in 1976.

Hearst Castle is the largest single home in the state of California and was made into
a National Historic Landmark in 1976.
It was commissioned in 1919 by newspaper mogul William Randolph Hearst and was only completed four years after his death in 1951.
While still under construction the mansion hosted some of the most lavish parties of the 1920s and 1930s with both movie stars and politicians rubbing shoulders at the decadent fêtes.

Lady Gaga shares sad selfie with Twitter followers after having wisdom teeth taken out ahead of major tour

Lady Gaga shared a down in the dumps selfie on Thursday after having her wisdom teeth extracted.
The 28-year-old singer clutched a large brown stuffed animal in the photo posted for her more than 40 million followers on Twitter.
'Chipmunk Cheeks. Wisdom Teeth out before tour. I can't eat. I'm gonna put some meatballs in a blender,' the superstar wrote along with the picture.

Gaga had her brown hair pulled back and her cheeks were noticeably puffy as she looked out with pretty but sad eyes in the picture.
She earlier tweeted about the procedure and her medication: 'Wisdom teeth out. P-p-Percocet p-p-Percocet'.

Lebanon diva, Maya Diab accused of copying Lady Gaga

Maya Diab was among many singers who performed at the concert of veteran Lebanese musician Ziad al-Rahbani

A Lebanese singer has been accused of imitating Lady Gaga after she posted a picture of herself online in what seemed to be a bathroom, wearing a form fitting black leather body suit paired with a black veil and sunglasses.
Maya Diab wore the bizarre costume, by popular Lebanese designer Nicolas Jebran, to a concert in Casino du Liban. The daring fashion statement was found to be similar to Lady Gaga’s style by several media outlets.
Social media users also expressed their opinions.
A user on photo and video-sharing website, Instagram, equated the all-black look with a “cockroach,” while another thought she was “daring” and had a positive view of the singer's attire.
User angel_sh1 said: “this is your level, the bathroom,” in a swipe at the starlet.
The Lebanese diva is not the first Arab diva to be compared to Lady Gaga. Another Lebanese singer, Miryam Fares, was accused of imitating Lady Gaga’s exaggerated fashion style and couture costumes by social media users.
Miryam Fares is popularly dubbed the “Queen we Stage,” as she focuses heavily on dancing and choreographed performances in her music videos and concerts.
Meanwhile, it is not the first time Maya Diab has been accused of imitating a Western singer. She was previously touted as a copycat of Beyoncé.

Lady Gaga goes gaga for Hatsune Miku, makes virtual idol her opening act

With Lady Gaga’s rehabilitation from hip surgery apparently having progressed enough that the pop star is ready to contend with a grueling performance schedule, she’s about to kick off a world tour celebrating her third album. But with millions of eyes on Gaga, she needs an opening act with a fan base large enough to do justice to the scale and importance of the six-month event, dubbed  artRAVE: The ARTPOP Ball.

Fittingly for a singer who’s made a name for herself with her provocative stances on image, perception, and reality, before Gaga takes the stage, concert goers will be entertained by a vocalist who doesn’t even exist in three-dimensional space: virtual idol Hatsune Miku.

With less than a month until the tour starts, Gaga herself made the big announcement through her personal Twitter account, when she tweeted the following on April 15.

“Hatsune Miku is opening The ARTPOP Ball,” wrote Gaga, who also linked a video of the aqua-tressed vocaloid performing “The World is Mine,” one of her most representative hits which was also used by Toyota in an American commercial for its Corolla sedan.

Two things are notable about the May 6-June 3 timeframe Gaga mentions Miku will be serving as opening act for. First, it doesn’t include the very first stop on the tour on May 4 in Fort Lauderdale. While this certainly detracts from the amount of international exposure Miku will receive, every venue within that span is in either the U.S. or Canada, so this is clearly not just a move to encourage fans in Miku’s native Japan to buy tickets. ArtRAVE: The ARTPOP Ball doesn’t swing through Japan until August 13, when the tour makes its one and only stop at Chiba Marine Stadium, for which the opening musician has yet to be determined.

The collaboration is a gigantic opportunity for Miku to win some fans on just about the largest music stage imaginable. For any other singer in this situation, we’d be worried about her ability to perform under such intense pressure, but somehow we have a feeling the virtual idol’s vocal performance will be in keeping with the amazing consistency she’s known for.

Lady Gaga And Boyfriend Taylor Kinney To Get Engaged?

Lady Gaga and other half Taylor Kinney have been dating for two years now, but according to sources, it looks like they may be ready to take their relationship to the next level, with reports claiming that Taylor has been busy shopping for engagement rings.

Gaga, real name Stefani Germanotta, could soon be Mrs. Kinney, if the rumours are anything to go by, with sources telling Life & Style that Kinney has been hunting for the perfect ring in secret.

“Taylor’s been looking at engagement rings for Stef for a couple of months,” an insider tells the magazine, adding: “He has told a couple of his close guy friends that he wants to propose soon.”
But, when will the big proposal actually happen? Insiders say that it was going to take place for the Born This Way singer's 28th birthday. However, Kinney didn't find the ring in time, so has pushed back the date.

“Taylor was considering proposing over her birthday,” the insider tells the mag. “But he hadn’t found the right ring in time. He wants to find something unique that will suit her personality.”

Taylor has reportedly been secretly shopping for engagement rings (Splash News)

Meanwhile, Gaga spoke out about her other half recently to say that he is definitely the one "in charge" in terms of their romance behind closed doors.

In an interview with Sirius XM's Morning Mash-Up, the eccentric star admitted she is “submissive” to her beau, saying: "He is totally in charge. I mean when I am home I am like, shoes are off, I'm making him dinner."

"He has a job too and he is really busy!"

Lady Gaga responds to Lily Allen 'martyr' praise: 'It was very sweet'

Lady Gaga has called Lilly Allen "very sweet" after hearing of her recent supportive comments.

Lily Allen recently defended the relatively poor sales of Gaga's ARTPOP album, saying that she should be "commended" for staying true to herself.

Speaking to BBC Radio 1's Scott Mills, Gaga called for all artists to support each other, rather than create rifts.

She said: "That's very sweet, I've always been a very big fan of hers and I appreciate her standing up for artists and for me in particular, that's really admirable for her to do that."

"I think all artists should stand by one another. When it becomes a competition then we're not supporting creativity and art, but when you support one another wholeheartedly then you're supporting everyone and anything to make what they love."

She added: "I thought that was very sweet, so thank you Lily, you're lovely."

Lady Gaga Music Video Shoot At Hearst Castle Wastes 356,000 Gallons Of Water During Worst Drought In California History

The five-time Grammy Award-winner recently shot the video for “G.U.Y.” — it features a medley of songs off of ARTPOP — at the historic Hearst Castle, a National and California Historical Landmark mansion located on the Central Coast of San Simeon, Calif.
Gaga, 28, utilized the iconic Neptune Pool at the famed estate, a perfect backdrop considering

it offers an expansive vista of the mountains, ocean and the main house.
One source revealed that Gaga agreed to donate $250,000 to the Hearst Castle Foundation, whose mission is to help preserve and restore the Hearst Castle’s twenty five thousand artifacts, in order to have the pool filled with water from an on-site irrigation plant.
The pool had to be drained before the shoot because it was leaking 5000 gallons of water each day.
However, once Gaga had finished filming, the water — earmarked to be re-used for on-site irrigation at the state park — was discovered to be unusable, a source who works at the Castle told Radar.
“The water had to be chlorinated because Gaga got into the pool with synchronized swimmers,” the insider, who asked not to be identified, said.
“Since the water was chlorinated, it couldn’t be used for any of the irrigation or landscaping at the Castle. The water was simply drained and disposed of.
“It was a huge waste of water which is such a precious resource in California at the moment because of the draught.”
2013 was the driest year California had experienced in 119 years.
In January, California Governor Jerry Brown declared a draught emergency with many communities imposing strict water restrictions.
What’s more, President Barack Obama even traveled to the Golden State in February and announced the federal government would pledge $183 million in aid for draught relief programs.
Ironically, as a trade off, Gaga also agreed to film public service announcements educating Californian’s on how to save and conserve water!
It’s unclear if the “Poker Face” singer was aware that the water was disposed of.
“It’s just ridiculous that all of that water was just dumped out after the video shoot was finished,” said our source.
“It’s extremely hypocritical for Gaga to be filming PSA’s telling Californian’s how to save water, when she just wasted so much of it!”
The waste of water did not seem to phase Governor Brown, who penned a thank-you note to Gaga, praising her for bringing awareness to conservation awareness.
“I want to personally thank you for the aid and assistance you are providing to Hearst Castle, the communities surrounding San Simeon and the state as a whole,” he said.
“I’ve called on all Californians to conserve water in every way possible and the assistance you are providing will aide in that effort.”
A rep for Gaga didn’t respond to request for comment, though a spokesperson for California State Parks insisted chlorinated water at “very low levels” was still be “used for irrigation purposes at Hearst Castle.”

Lady Gaga to perform at S Korea festival

The festival, to be held at Seoul´s Olympic stadium on August 15-16, will feature a host of K-pop stars including "Gangnam Style" rapper Psy, the YG entertainment agency said.

Lady Gaga will appear on the second day of the festival, to be co-hosted by YG and a local music production agency.

When the 28-year-old singer last performed in Seoul in April 2012, religious groups called for the concert to be cancelled on the grounds that she advocated homosexuality and pornography.

The show went ahead -- but only after a state ratings board judged it unsuitable for younger audiences, prompting a ban on under-18 fans.

It was not immediately clear if her show at this year´s festival would be subject to similar restrictions.

"It´s too early to say because we have yet to see the contents and details of her concert here," a spokeswoman for the state rating board told.

"All we can say now is that our board could make a similar decision as in 2012, if her upcoming concert is seen as unsuitable for young, teenaged audiences," she added.

In typically eccentric style, Lady Gaga raised eyebrows last month during a gig at the South by Southwest festival in Texas when she had a "vomit artist" regurgitate coloured soy milk onto her cleavage.

Other headliners at the Seoul festival include top K-pop boy band BigBang and girl group 2NE1.Reflecting the increasing global popularity of K-pop, South Korean girl band Crayon Pop will open a series of Lady Gaga concerts in Canada and the United States in June and July.

Lady Gaga & Studio XO’s Flying Dress: The Volantis

Do you ever wonder what the future of transportation will include? Will it be anything like the Volantis, the world’s first flying dress? Well it will if Lady Gaga has anything to do with it. She along with designer Benjamin Males and other creative minds at the London-based fashion and technology company Studio XO, have created this contraption for the songstress. One part fashion, one part futuristic transportation, the device is remote controlled and flies using 12 battery-powered propellers.
The creation was unveiled with Lady Gaga at a warehouse in Brooklyn, New York City, in November last year. Co-Founder of Studio XO, Benjamin Males stated “Volantis might seem very science fiction, but if you consider the developments in vehicle design, if you look at the trends toward space travel and jet pack design, actually the idea of having a personal aerial vehicle that has to have style doesn’t seem that crazy”. He went on to add that “Who knows, in ten years time we may all be flying round in Volantises”. Check out the gallery and video below and speak your mind on it after the jump!

Is Lady Gaga's "G.U.Y." Music Video Her Craziest Yet?

Lady Gaga stepped behind the camera to direct her latest music video, which features a medley of songs off of ARTPOP including "Venus" and "G.U.Y." and the result is just as bizarre as you might expect.
The nearly 12-minute clip - Gaga's longest music video to date - opens with the singer donning wings like a giant avian-human hybrid of sorts. She struggles to get up after being felled by an arrow through the chest and then gets baptized (or buried?) in a pool at Hearst Castle in California, as a band featuring stars of the Real Housewives of Beverly Hills plays stiffly in the background. (We're not making this up.)
Then, as the short film transitions from "Venus" to "G.U.Y.," we get a little bit of choreographed dancing - as well as cameos from Michael Jackson and Jesus.
Check out the full video below, which premiered on Lady Gaga's VEVO page Saturday night. What do you think?

9-year-old and Lady Gaga receive anti-bullying awards

ST. CHARLES, MO (KTVI) – A nine year old who sold tee shirts to help fight bullying was honored Saturday night by the Megan Meier Foundation during its annual Celebration Gala held at the Heart of St. Charles Banquet Center.
Jordan Reynolds is a third grader who learned about anti-bullying efforts from his mixed martial arts teacher Jermaine Andre.  Jordan set up a web site and  by selling tee shirts raised 403 dollars which he donated to the Megan Meier Foundation.
Andre was also honored during the gala for his ongoing efforts to teach kids that bullying is wrong and to help them build up their self-confidence through fitness and mixed martial arts training.
The Megan Meier Foundation honors the memory of Megan Meier, a St. Charles County student who was cyberbullied to the point of committing suicide.  Her mother, Tina Meier operates it.  Meier says the movement is growing. “Students and other adults are really stepping in and saying it is not okay to belittle people; it is not okay to cyberbully people and it is not okay that kids feel there is nowhere to go.”
The Foundation’s marquee award, “The Voice of Inspiration” went to Gary VanMeter, executive Director of Missouri United School Insurance Council for his support of the Megan Meier Foundation in its early years.
Four high school students were honored during the dinner for their efforts in their own schools to fight bullying.  Chloe Nelson, BreAnna Legan, Brooke Blyth and Samantha Caraway each received a scholarship.  Jani Simpson was recognized with “The Voice of Compassion” award.
Well known entertainer Lady Gaga was recognized for her anti-bullying campaign through her “Born This Way” Foundation, although she did not appear at the dinner.
Fox Two’s Sports Director Martin Kilkoyne served as emcee and auctioneer.

Arthur Kaptainis On Lady Gaga

Lady Gaga performing at her last show in Roseland NYC
“Is Lady Gaga as radical as she seems?” This is not a question to preoccupy many readers of this column. But it caught my eye as the subject line of a recent Concordia University announcement related to a chapter in a scholarly book about this performer.

The volume is Lady Gaga and Popular Music: Performing Gender, Fashion, and Culture. The chapter in question — Celebrity, Spectacle and Surveillance: Understanding Lady Gaga’s “Paparazzi” and “Telephone” through Music, Image, and Movement — is the joint work of a Concordia sociologist, Marc LaFrance, and Lori Burns, the director of the school of music at the University of Ottawa.

If you are surprised by an expression of interest by two tenured professors in pop-music videos, you are even further out of touch than I am. Competency in counterpoint and knowledge of Beethoven string quartets are by no means necessary, or even helpful, if you are seeking work these days in a musicology department. At best, they will not be held against you.

Nor do the venerable scholarly virtues of balance and objectivity have anything like their traditional prestige. I leave it to Gaga fans to judge the validity of the observations Burns and LaFrance make about her videos. But it is clear that they approach the subject not with the dispassionate stance of mid-20th-century scholars but a full arsenal of turn-of-the-century politically correct expectations.

A few of which, alas, Lady Gaga has failed to satisfy.

She has done badly on race. Burns and LaFrance found that “whiteness is associated with bourgeois respectability” in her videos and “blackness with aggression and low social mobility.” This is to say that the butlers and chauffeurs in Paparazzi are black, as are the female prison inmates and brutish boyfriends of Telephone.

There is more. Disability — which ranks immediately behind sex and race in the contemporary hit parade of academic priorities — is not portrayed in a positive light by Lady Gaga but deployed as a metaphor for punishment meted out to celebrities who fly too close to the sun.

But the Gaga scorecard is not all bad. Give her a point for sex.

“She tends to celebrate strong female characters and non-normative sexual experiences by representing queer sexualities as linked to emancipation and self-determination,” LaFrance assures us. “That’s a positive message for the LGBTQ community, and one she upholds again and again.”

On the content of these comments, I have nothing to say. I am not a Lady Gaga authority. I wish only to point out that the aims of Burns and LaFrance are not confined to making perceptive comments about this performer and illuminating her work.

There is a higher objective, and this is to assess her success in upholding ideological priorities that are as thoroughly agreed on and impervious to criticism as any proclamation by the Union of Soviet Composers or dictate from the Soviet Ministry of Culture in the good old days of socialist realism.

“We want to get people to question whether Gaga herself is subverting or upholding that status quo she claims she is working against,” LaFrance says. This statement is rather different from: “We want people to understand Lady Gaga and her art.”

Lady Gaga is not the only pop star of suspect loyalties. Miley Cyrus has been called to the principal’s office for the “assertion of her sexual womanhood at the expense of black women.” This I discovered in a blog by Melanie Marshall, one of the editors of the Gaga volume, and a lecturer at University College Cork. (Marshall, I should note, does not confine her attentions to contemporary pop phenomena. She is now at work on “Italian Renaissance sexualities.”)

Lily Allen describes Lady Gaga as a 'martyr'

Lily Allen has called Lady Gaga a ''martyr'' for choosing ''art'' over commercial success.
The 'Air Balloon' hitmaker has defended her fellow singer after she was criticised for her latest album 'ARTPOP' being a relative flop, insisting she deserves credit for the risks she has taken.
Speaking to Rolling Stone magazine, she said: ''If she's not succeeding commercially because she's standing by what she does as art, then that's a f**king great thing.
''That's to be commended. That's what makes a martyr. There's nothing wrong with that.''
Lily has had similar problems with her own music, and admitted she had to choose her singles carefully to make sure they were acceptable for radio play.
She explained: ''I would love 'Hard Out Here' to have been a single, but you can't have a song that has the word 'bitch' in it 72 times on the radio.''
The star previously admitted he own singles were ''rubbish'' after receiving criticism from a fan on Twitter, desribing her new music is ''docile pop rubbish'', adding, ''So disappointing. She properly just wrote some rubbish to cash some cheques. (sic)''
The 28-year-old singer was quick to fire back and told the follower: ''What you've heard so far yes. All i can do is do my best, the labels and the radio stations won't play the better stuff. (sic)''

Lady Gaga uses tape to "shape" her face and make her look younger - despite risking permanent damage

If you’ve ever wondered whether Lady Gaga has had any work done on her face - well, she has revealed exactly what it is - tape.

The singer is an avid fan of facelift tape and uses it to pull the skin around her cheekbones and neck tight in a bid to look younger.

Hollywood icon Cher is a fan of the beauty product but with Cher it makes sense because she is 67.

However, at the tender age of 28, Lady Gaga admits she still uses the sticky stuff most days to help “shape” her rather more youthful face – even if she risks damaging it.

Explaining her morning ritual, the Poker Face songstress says: “When I have my wig cap on and I’m taping my face, it’s a sort of meditation for me. Every day, it starts the same way. It’s like a mantra.

“I wash my face, I pin my hair back and put on a wig cap and I ask, ‘How am I going to form my eyes today with this tape? How will I pull back my neck with tape?’”

Well, that’s a daily dilemma for us all – what shape shall I squash my eyes into today?

“Looking artificial can be honest,” she continues. “Being glamorous can come from a place of authenticity and a place of love.”

However, being “glamorous” is also going to make Gaga’s skin sag quicker than it would otherwise do, we're sorry to inform her.

We contacted Harley Street plastic surgeon Jeya Prakash, who warned that her daily taping regime could be causing permanent damage – including internal scarring.

He tells us: “By taping your face tight, you are reducing the circulation which means there are less nutrients getting to the skin, so abnormal collagen will be produced.

“This is like internal scarring as different types of cells form the skin - like with a scar. In the long term, it will speed up the ageing process.”

On top of that, the sticky stuff is pretty deadly for the skin externally.

He adds: “If the tape has plastic adhesives, it’s a toxin.”

Best leave the Croydon facelifts to Cher, Gags, or before long you will actually need one…

Lady Gaga Finishes Roseland Ballroom Tribute Concerts

Lady Gaga finished the last performance of her seven concert tribute to the Roseland Ballroom on Monday night. The historic music hall holds memories for many people, including the famous New Yorker, who admitted that she cried before taking the stage for the last time there. Her father Joe Germanotta, who has even older memories of the Roseland said “There’s a lot of memories in this place. It’s sad to see the place go. It really makes me happy that she’s the last one to perform here. She’s a New York girl.”

The poster promoting the concerts show a black-and-white photograph of the pop star in 2008, before she became enormously famous, with a quote from her. “I am Lady Gaga, a singer/songwriter. You’re going to know me one day. August 21, 2008. New York City.” The photo serves as a reminder of the star’s beginning as Stefani Germanotta, as she says goodbye to the Roseland Ballroom as Lady Gaga. It also displays her spot-on prediction, and the unwavering pride, confidence, and belief in herself. It is also a reminder of her rocket-propelled ascent to mega pop star fame.

The Roseland Ballroom was founded in 1917 and transformed several times over the years since. It was moved from Philadelphia, Pennsylvania to New York City in 1919. The original New York location was torn down, and the ballroom was relocated to 52nd Street. It served as a skating rink, a place for ballroom dancing, and a disco. It has most recently been the site of many famous bands and musicians, from Madonna and Beyonce, to Nirvana and the Red Hot Chili Peppers. According to the New Yorker, it will soon be an apartment building, but not before a last dance party farewell.

The Roseland Ballroom was decked out for Lady Gaga and her tribute concerts, in roses, its overhead disco ball, a replica F train, and neon signs to finish off the New York vibe. At each concert, a close friend of the star, and fellow performer Lady Starlight, opened for her. Lady Gaga kicked off the first of her concerts on her birthday with a piano version of Born This Way. The concerts each involved an 11 set song list that included old songs like Just Dance and Poker Face, and new songs like Dope and G.U.Y.

During her concerts, she wore her sexy, showy costumes and loud wigs, in typical Gaga fashion. A Frankenstein Gaga danced around the stage as she sang Monster. The smaller, more intimate setting of the ballroom allowed Lady Gaga to really interact with her fans or “little Monsters” as she calls them. At one point she played a rose-covered keytar and blew the crowd away with a rocker performance of Bad Romance. To kick off her last show at the ballroom she said “Suddenly you wake up and you just know who the f*** you are.” She connected with the fans throughout her show, shared personal tidbits before choice songs, and had an unforgettable performance of You and I, really showcasing her vocals. Towards the end of the song she added, “I’m not leaving. This is my stage. This is my house.”

The Roseland Ballroom’s big finish, that were the tribute concerts by Lady Gaga, is a fitting way to pay homage to the iconic hall. The performance of her seven concert, super-pop dance music finale, after the Roseland Ballroom has seen multiple eras and a variety of music genres, is an appropriate farewell. Lady Gaga will continue to give her fans what they want. Her ArtRave: The Artpop Ball tour will kick off on May 4 in Florida.
