Universal Music Group hit hard by Lady Gaga’s album flop

Lady Gaga’s “ARTPOP” album last fall certainly didn't give Universal Music Group any pop.
Gaga’s fourth-quarter flop helped cut Universal’s revenue in the period 9.3 percent, the company said in a report Tuesday.
The tough Japanese economy — which accounts for 25 percent of global music sales — also hurt.
Earnings before interest, tax and amortization, or Ebita, was off 11.1 percent, or 7.8 percent on a constant-currency basis.
The tough quarter cut profits for the year by 2.9 percent, to $702 million (511 million euros).
They were up 1.4 percent on a constant-currency basis, the company said.
Full-year revenue rose 7.5 percent to $6.7 billion (4,886 million euros) or 12.8 percent when adjusted for currencies.
For the year, Universal Music’s best-selling albums were from EMI’s Katy Perry and Interscope’s Eminem.
UMG reported a 75 percent jump in subscription and streaming revenue, though it didn’t break out a number.
The music company, long the focus of sale speculation amid chaotic changes at its France-based owner, Vivendi, seems to be staying put for now.
Vivendi is planning to separate the music group and its France-based pay-TV operation, Canal Plus, into a new division while it sorts out its telecom assets.
Claudio Aspesi, a senior analyst at Bernstein Research, told investors Feb. 25 that “Vivendi seems open to potential future acquisitions in media,” but to acquire a new leg to the company could be a mistake.
“The key,” Aspesi continued, “is for the UMG-EMI company to avoid the most worrying strategic pitfall of acquiring a new leg altogether with limited or no synergies with the existing portfolio of TV and music assets.”

City of Austin turns down permit for Lady Gaga to play during SXSW

Austin360.com reports that the city of Austin has denied a permit request for Lady Gaga to play on top of a giant Doritos vending machine at this year's South By Southwest music festival.
"Our conclusion was based primarily on public safety concerns," Pitts said via email. "As part of the review process the applicant provides a talent list to the city team (AFD, APD, ATCEMS and Office of Special Events) to review and we can adjust public resources as needed. We look at the size and capacity of the location covered by the permit being sought and how it fits with the anticipated attendance, based on event capacity and promotion. At the end of the day, it’s a parking lot."

Lady Gaga Excited For Space Trip

Lady Gaga can’t wait to go into space.
The Poker Face singer is preparing for her performance on Sir Richard Branson‘s Virgin Galactic first commercial space flight next year, and she’ll use the opportunity to spread a “message of love”.
“I honestly can’t wait [to perform in space]. I can’t wait to design the performance,” she said in a new interview with Harper’s Bazaar.
“I’m auctioning off my second seat [on a Virgin Galactic
flight] to raise money for the Born This Way Foundation. I want to make a moment that is about much more than me.
“Performing in space is such an honor. I want to challenge myself to come up with something that will not only bring everyone together but will also have a message of love that blasts into the beyond.”
Gaga was then asked where she calls home.
“My home” is a controversial topic,” she said.
“I don’t exactly have one. I live all over the world. I keep a small rental in New York, where I hang many of my hats when I come to see my parents and New York
pals.’

Why is Lady Gaga's latest video is delayed ?

Lady Gaga talks about why her latest video is delayed:
"I won't give away what the video's about because she's worked really hard on it," he said, "but I was
n't going to see like 500 dancers in bookshelf hats and meat hats, whatever they do!"
But, the Oscar nominee said the castle was "great" and "beautiful," just not exactly what he had in mind. Plus, Gaga was filming at Hearst Castle with The Real Housewives of  Beverly Hills ladies, and it doesn't sound like Jonah got brought in on any cat fights or meltdown drama!

Jonah Hill Crashed Lady Gaga's Music Video Shoot at Hearst Castle

Jonah Hill thought he'd step out of the limelight for a bit, only when he tried to do that, he ended up crashing Lady Gaga's music video shoot!
The Wolf of Wall Street star wanted "to take a little trip just to clear my head and get away from all this Hollywood stuff," he explained on Wednesday's Jimmy Kimmel Live. So, he arranged a day trip to Hearst Castle in northern California, which he thought was "somewhere pretty and different where I wouldn't see anyone from work or anything."
But instead of running into Leonardo DiCaprio, he found himself sharing a castle with the Fame Monster herself! "So I get there, and I'm supposed to have this private tour of the castle, but they're shooting a Lady Gaga music video! There's trucks and lights, and I'm like, 'Oh, no! This isn't a vacation at all!'"

Lady Gaga gets letter of thanks from Jerry Brown

Backstage at the artRave in New York
The pop superstar, who wanted the iconic but leaky pool at Hearst Castle filled for a "creative project" she is shooting, got approval for the shoot after she and her parents and associates agreed to make a $250,000 donation to help maintain and repair the castle, including repairs at Neptune Pool, according to the Hearst Castle Preservation Foundation.
Gaga also agreed to promote the castle and water conservation on social media, and to shoot a water conservation PSA.
The Hearst San Simeon State Park is part of the California state park system, and the arrangement caught the attention of Gov. Jerry Brown.
"I want to personally thank you for the aid and assistance you are providing to Hearst Castle, the communities surrounding San Simeon and the state as a whole," the governor said in a letter to Lady Gaga on Wednesday. "I've called on all Californians to conserve water in every way possible and the assistance you are providing will aide in that effort."

The castle foundation said the pool was filled with water from storage facilities on the Castle property and that the water will be returned when filming is done.

Lady Gaga wraps up shoot at Hearst Castle

After three days of rehearsals, staging and shooting, Lady Gaga and her dancers, choreographers and staff are wrapping things up at Hearst Castle. By tomorrow, things should be back to normal at the Enchanted Hill.
Lady Gaga has been shooting a music video and a couple of other projects at the castle since Tuesday. It has been an amazing coordination effort considering they were not able to have much time to rehearse on site as the crew just arrived Tuesday. They managed to shoot at four different locations at the castle working nearly round the clock even as public tours continued in and around all the activity.
Dancers, synchronized swimmers, the Desperate Housewives of Beverly Hills (they play a role in the production) and lots of costumes had to be coordinated for the multi-million dollar project. Lady Gaga and her family donated $250-thousand dollars to the Hearst Castle Preservation Foundation, as well as paid tens of thousands in fees, state costs, and donations to local agencies.

Will Lady Gaga be a winner at The Brit Awards 2014?

Lady Gaga at her previous World tour : The Born This Way ball

What awards is she nominated for?

Lady Gaga is up for just the one award at this year's Brits - Best International Female.

Who stands in her way?

Pop titan Katy Perry, newcomer Lorde, enduring pop stalwart Pink and Janelle Monae all stand between Lady Gaga and her applause/award.
Just when we thought Lady Gaga had reached her peak, she made a name for herself all over again in 2013 with two massive singles but will they help her at this year's Brits?
Applause reached number 5 in the UK, and her massive single Do What U Want reminded us exactly why we love her.
Having performed it on X Factor, she also teamed up with Christina Aguilera for a duet version, and it just seems to get more popular by the day.
The Applause hitmaker won a whopping three Brits in 2010, including the category she's up for this time round, so with that behind her there's no reason why she shouldn't do it all over again.
The ceremony will take place on February 19 at The O2 Arena in London, and it will be shown live on ITV1 at 8pm.

Lady Gaga to shoot creative project at Hearst Castle

Two icons — Hearst Castle and Lady Gaga — will come together next week when the pop singer begins a creative project at the former estate of media magnate William Randolph Hearst.
Shooting dates have not been confirmed, according to Remar Sutton, board member of the Hearst Castle Preservation Foundation. He did not give details of the project but said it was much more involved than a music video, for instance.

While there, Lady Gaga will also tape a water-conservation public service announcement and a short feature on the castle’s uniqueness, to be donated to the Hearst Castle Preservation Foundation.
The flamboyant entertainer and art lover has toured the castle before and has a keen interest in its art work and the extraordinary detail of its architecture – especially the ceilings, Sutton said.
Lady Gaga, her parents and her associates have agreed to donate $250,000 to the foundation, pay the castle’s standard $22,100 special event fee and reimburse the state for all costs related to the production. That includes extra staffing for heightened security and rearranged tour routes.
She also has agreed to underwrite a $25,000 study evaluating the feasibility of connecting two wells in the San Simeon Campground to Cambria’s water system. Doing so could help stabilize the water supply for the community and State Parks. (Hearst Castle is now a state park.) Cambrians are under Stage 3 water restrictions, the most stringent in a set of regulations imposed during water shortages.
The castle is perhaps best known for its eccentric creator/owner, extensive art collection, ties to the entertainment industry and the estate’s heyday between 1919 and 1940.
But a Lady Gaga video could put the monument firmly on the radar of the millennial generation, many of whom may not even have heard of Hearst Castle.
Local production is expected to take about three days, during which time tour routes may be rearranged somewhat. However, some tour takers may be able to see filming-related activities.
Dozens of area hotel rooms were expected to be occupied by the more than 125 crew members involved with the production.
The Deed of Trust between Hearst Corp. and the state of California prohibits commercial enterprises at the castle. But corporation officials can approve such uses if they will benefit the castle and state residents, according to Stephen Hearst, vice president and general manager of the corporation’s western properties.
Hearst said in a telephone interview Saturday that he agreed to allow the commercial-venture taping on the hilltop because of Lady Gaga’s $250,000 donation and commitment to help promote the preservation foundation and the monument.
Neptune Pool
A related — if temporary benefit — of the Lady Gaga production is that the world-famous but leaky outdoor Neptune Pool is being refilled for the taping sessions.
Because of the historic California drought, State Parks last month began draining the 345,000 gallons of water in the 95-by-104-foot pool, using it to irrigate castle plantings. Special connections were made between the pool and the irrigation system.
The pool reportedly loses 3,000 to 5,000 gallons of water a day due to evaporation and to leaks that are due to be repaired, perhaps as early as this summer. It wasn’t prudent, officials said, to continue those losses at a time when water supplies are so low.
The Hearst Corp. donated the water to top off the pool for the Lady Gaga production, estimated at about 100,000 gallons, Hearst said.
And the water? It still will be used to irrigate the gardens, as it would have been if it had been left in the reservoir, Hearst said. “We haven’t ‘spent’ any water,” he noted. “We’re just storing it somewhere different” for awhile.
The nonprofit preservation foundation’s primary mission is to help preserve and restore Hearst Castle's 25,000 artifacts and artworks.

Lady Gaga on travelling to outer and inner space

Lady Gaga performing 'Marry The Night' at the 2012's MTV EMAs
Who else but Lady Gaga could utter such a phrase and still be taken seriously?
“I want to challenge myself to come up with something that will not only bring everyone together but will also have a message of love that blasts into the beyond,” she says in the March issue of Harper’s Bazaar, referring to her planned one-song performance on a Virgin Galactic flight, which was announced back in November.
The 27-year-old singer will be auctioning off her plus-one seat on the space plane to raise money for her Born This Way Foundation, and she envisions a future in which she’s like Oprah Winfrey or Melinda Gates, making money so she can give to others.
Still, it hasn’t been all sky-high happiness and generosity for Lady Gaga: At the end of last year she went through a bad bout of depression, she told the mag.
“I felt very taken advantage of by people I trusted,” she said. “I asked my mother, “I work so hard. I never stop. I never say no. Why doesn’t this person love me, Mum? Why was this person willing to hurt me to help themselves? Why wasn’t I enough? Why is money more important than me? She reminded me to forgive others for not seeing God where I see it. I see God in my fans.”
Her mother, she said, helped her understand her own feelings, and she was able to pull from herself out of her depression come the new year.
“I really felt like I was dying — my light completely out. I said to myself, ‘Whatever is left in there, even just one light molecule, you will find it and make it multiply...’ Depression doesn’t take away your talents — it just makes them harder to find. But I always find it. I learned that my sadness never destroyed what was great about me. You just have to go back to that greatness, find that one little light that’s left.
“I’m lucky I found one little glimmer stored away.”

Lady Gaga On Love and Lies | Harper's BAZAAR

GAGA ON LOVE AND LIES Credits to: Harper's Bazaar Staff

It's not always easy being Lady Gaga—and in 2013, it was especially difficult. For the first time since she emerged from the New York City club ether in 2008, Planet Gaga seemed in peril. Her latest album, ARTPOP, an experimental R&B-tinged effort featuring artwork by Jeff Koons and a controversial duet with R. Kelly, divided critics. She also endured a very public split with her longtime manager, Troy Carter, just a week before the album's release in November—all of which seemed to knock Gaga out of orbit. But 2014 is a new year, and Stefani Joanne Angelina Germanotta is a space oddity of a pop star. After a brief break around the holidays and some well-documented quality time with her boyfriend, Chicago Fire actor Taylor Kinney (and sporting some remarkable early-winter pantless 'n' plaid looks), Gaga is back to being her most inimitably Gaga, with a sparkling new Versace campaign and her upcoming ArtRave tour, which launches later this spring.
How does one account for such resilience, such triumphant unflappability, in the face of turmoil? Bazaar drew up a Proustian little Gaga questionnaire designed to reveal some of the secrets of her extraordinary Gaga-ness. The Lady kindly obliged by answering honestly and fabulously—and she did not disappoint.
HARPER'S BAZAAR: How have you changed in the past few years?
LADY GAGA: I'm actually not very different at all. I work all day, do research, sketch my ideas, prepare for performances. My experience with fame has been the opposite: "How can I stop this from changing me?" I mean I'm not broke anymore—that's good! But today I'm more comfortable with being who I am. When I was younger, I felt pressure to become someone else once I became successful. But it's the intention of the work that's changed. I have fans now. I have a new purpose: to remind them that I am one of them, that we are one another. My consciousness has changed.
HB: What was the first big musical moment in your life?
LG: I went to see Phantom of the Opera with my grandma and my mom when I was very little. The stage, the voice, the music?…Composer Andrew Lloyd Webber has been a massive inspiration to me for some time—the storytelling, that deliciously somber undertone in his music. I just knew that he could see it while he was creating it. It is the same way I experience music.
"The three most expensive items I've ever purchased, including an actual house: my sable, a strand of diamonds, and my Mikimoto pearls."
HB: What's your favorite outfit of all time?
LG: Audrey Hepburn at the derby in My Fair Lady—the giant white hat with flower detail and bonnet, a mermaid lace gown with a giant bow, and a walking stick. I've loved that since I was little. I'll design something like that one day.
HB: Do you keep a lot of clothes that you've worn over the years?
LG: The fashion I've acquired over the years is so sacred to me—from costumes to couture, high fashion to punk wear I've collected from my secret international hot spots. I keep everything in an enormous archive in Hollywood. The clothes are on mannequins, also on hangers and in boxes with a photo of each piece, and there's a Web site where I can go to look through everything. It's too big—I could never sort through it myself! But these garments tell the stories of my life. And then there are the tour pieces. This is the section that is most sacred to me. These are the pieces that have collected energy, joy, and screams from fans all over the world. My fashion is my most prized possession for two reasons: 1) because it is a visualization of all the hard work I've put in to get where I am today; 2) because it is a legend to the encyclopedia of my life. It is exactly what I've aimed to seep into the artistic consciousness of people all over the world—that life is an art form.
HB: What is your home like?
LG: My "home" is a controversial topic. I don't exactly have one. I live all over the world. I keep a small rental in New York, where I hang many of my hats when I come to see my parents and New York pals. It's like a tiny jewel box, covered in rose-gold mirrors, with an oversize pink couch, an expensive vase, a white Marilyn piano, and a boudoir. I do not keep a lot of clothes here—mostly punk wear. And the three most expensive items I've ever purchased, including an actual house: my sable, a strand of diamonds, and my Mikimoto pearls.
HB: How do you think people in the future will feel about fashion right now?
LG: I'm not sure. I imagine that there will be a revival of some of these aesthetics—the more bold ones. Those who have watered down themselves for "sale" might make money now, but they are shortchanging their legend. I always think to myself, How do I want to be remembered? I don't want to be remembered as anything but brave. The only good intention to make money is to help others. I want to be Oprah. I want to be Melinda Gates. If I ever sell products other than my talents, then it will be to give more to others.
HB: What excites you about the idea of performing in space?
LG: I honestly can't wait. I can't wait to design the performance. I'm auctioning off my second seat [on a Virgin Galactic flight] to raise money for the Born This Way Foundation. I want to make a moment that is about much more than me. Performing in space is such an honor. I want to challenge myself to come up with something that will not only bring everyone together but will also have a message of love that blasts into the beyond.

"I don't want to be remembered as anything but brave. I want to be Oprah. I want to be Melinda Gates"

HB: What's something that you're better at now than when you were younger?
LG: I am better with food. I don't have an eating disorder anymore. I'm also better at not letting people take advantage of me. Five years ago, when I spotted someone with a hidden agenda, I allowed them to stay around me. I didn't want to believe it. I thought if I ignored it, then they would eventually see me again—that I'm a human being and not a doll. But it doesn't work that way. I speak up now. I realized that it's my own fault that people take advantage. I should be around people who cherish my talents, my health, my time. I'm not a pawn for anyone's future business. I'm an artist. I deserve better than to be loyal to people who only believe in me because I make money.
HB: Romeo & Juliet or Titanic?
LG: Romeo & Juliet—both the Shakespeare and the Baz [Luhrmann] versions I was changed by profoundly as a child. But I have to say, Titanic is also a classic.
HB: John Lennon or Paul McCartney?
LG: I love Paul so much, but I was and will always be a Lennon girl.
HB: Do you believe in ghosts?
LG: Yes. I have many old souls around me all the time.
HB: What are your guilty pleasures?
LG: Russian hookers and cheap gin. At least I'm honest.
HB: If you were an animal, what would it be?
LG: A unicorn.
HB: What's the myth about you that you'd like to dispel?
LG: That I'm a myth.
HB: What's something true about you that people should know?
LG: That it's not an act.
HB: When was the last time you laughed out loud? At what?
LG: Today. My Taylor [Kinney, Gaga's boyfriend] stole my SpongeBob SquarePants socks from Tokyo.

"I am better with food. I don't have an eating disorder anymore. I'm also better at not letting people take advantage of me."

HB: What was the last thing you talked about with your mother?
LG: I went through a rough time last year. I felt very taken advantage of by people I trusted. I asked my mother, "I work so hard. I never stop. I never say no. Why doesn't this person love me, Mom? Why was this person willing to hurt me to help themselves? Why wasn't I enough? Why is money more important than me? She reminded me to forgive others for not seeing God where I see it. I see God in my fans. She said, "You're hurt because you don't operate this way. You are fiercely protective of your inventions because you are your fans." She helped me understand my own feelings. When someone has pulled the wool over my eyes, I feel that they have pulled the wool over the eyes of millions of fans around the world. She helped me to forgive. You can't force people to have the same world consciousness and awareness as you do.
HB: When was the last time you cried?
LG: Yesterday. I'm creative. I'm always a laugh away from a tear.
HB: If you received a visit from yourself in the future, what would you want to ask your future self?
LG: I'd ask her to do a duet with me—that would be original. Then I would tell her that I'm so happy she didn't die young.
HB: Is there anything you regret doing—or not doing?
LG: Sometimes I get this gut feeling about people—maybe I sense a hidden agenda or that they care for the money more than the message. I wish that I'd listen to that feeling instead of waiting for the truth to rear its ugly head. I'm a smart girl. I'm loyal. But sometimes I'm too loyal. I'm not loyal enough to myself.
HB: How much attention do you pay to what people say about you?
LG: I've never had that type of relationship with art, that sort of hypercritical thing that's going around. I often think people don't know what to think of me, and in fact this is precisely the objective of many of my creations. Even back in the days with Lady Starlight, my original partner, we aimed to bemuse. This feeling of bemusement—it's neither good nor bad. It just is. Whether critics realize it or not, they've been in a very long argument since my public birth. Is it right or is it wrong? This was the intention of those twisted nursery rhyme, I-aim-to-confuse-you verses in my song "Applause." The conversation is still happening because they don't know what to think. They're still scratching their heads. This grappling is my art form—and it's powerful, because whether they like it or not, they're still talking.

"I'm a smart girl. I'm loyal. But sometimes I'm too loyal. I'm not loyal enough to myself."

HB: What's the biggest thing you've learned about yourself so far?
LG: I became very depressed at the end of 2013. I was exhausted fighting people off. I couldn't even feel my own heartbeat. I was angry, cynical, and had this deep sadness like an anchor dragging everywhere I go. I just didn't feel like fighting anymore. I didn't feel like standing up for myself one more time—to one more person who lied to me. But January 1, I woke up, started crying again, and I looked in the mirror and said, "I know you don't want to fight. I know you think you can't, but you've done this before. I know it hurts, but you won't survive this depression." I really felt like I was dying—my light completely out. I said to myself, "Whatever is left in there, even just one light molecule, you will find it and make it multiply. You have to for you. You have to for your music. You have to for your fans and your family." Depression doesn't take away your talents—it just makes them harder to find. But I always find it. I learned that my sadness never destroyed what was great about me. You just have to go back to that greatness, find that one little light that's left. I'm lucky I found one little glimmer stored away.
HB: Are you happy?
LG: Today, yes.
HB: What do you want written on your gravestone?
LG: "She spread love with every invention."

Lady Gaga is nominated at the 25th annual edition of the GLAAD Media Awards, which recognize and honor media for their fair, accurate and inclusive representations of the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender community and the issues that affect their lives.
Lady Gaga’s album ARTPOP is nominated in the Outstanding Music Artist category. The event will take place in Los Angeles on April 12 and in New York City on May 3.
